Here in Sydney school holidays have started. And there was much rejoicing – no need to nag the kids to come to the table for breakfast, no need to shower and get dressed and no need to pack lunch boxes!
But after just 1 day of school holiday with no lunch boxes, I decided yesterday to pack the kids lunch boxes again. I thought I’d share these 5 reasons why it’s beneficial to pack lunch boxes during school holidays.
- Allows the kids to feed themselves when hungry.
“Mum, I’m hungry” or “Muuuuuuum, I’m starving”. Does this sound familiar?
Packing a lunch box alleviates this. If we are at home, it’s in the fridge and they know where to find it. Or if we are going out, it comes with us. - Saves money.
An outing to anywhere without a lunch box ends up costing a fair amount of money. A packed lunch solves this. Today we went to the movies and after paying $39 for tickets, I was grateful I didn’t have to buy anything else. - Saves Time.
Ever heard that saying “spend a little time, to make time”? Well that certainly applies to when you pack lunch boxes. Snacks / lunches are ready whenever they are needed. You don’t have to find somewhere to buy food they like (and that’s not crap) and you don’t have to line up. Plus by packing them, you’ve managed to minimise any meltdowns about being hungry. - Saves dealing with kids whilst in a queue.
If you go anywhere remotely popular during school holidays, you’ll probably end up in a queue at some point to buy food or drink. And have you ever noticed that whenever you are in a queue, your kids get bored and hangry (hungry and angry) really quickly. Do yourself a favour, and avoid the boredom and hangry’s by packing a lunch box. - Going back to school routine isn’t a shock.
By packing lunch boxes during school holidays, it means when the kids go back to school, getting back into the swing of school routine isn’t such a shock.
Well there you have. They are my top 5 reasons to pack school holiday lunch boxes. Do you have any you’d like to add?
BTW, today’s lunch box included a Berry Mango smoothie with baby spinach added, popcorn popped in coconut oil, honeydew melon, strawberries, water crackers and cheese, edamame and oat muesli slice and chocolate ‘pumpkin’ cake. This snack box kept them happy on our morning outing, the movies and after swimming. We had sushi at home for lunch.
