Why Make It, Not Buy It?

This recipe uses just 5 simple ingredients, 3 you probably already have in your pantry right now. If you were to buy a basil pesto from the supermarket, you’re likely to get an ingredient list that looks like this:

Canola Oil, Basil Puree (26%) [Basil, Canola Oil, Dextrose, Salt, Antioxidants (301, 300), Acidity Regulators (330, 260), Thickener (415)], Cashew Nuts (24%), Parmesan Cheese (9%) [Milk, Salt, Starter Culture, Non-Animal Rennet], Pine Nuts (3%), Vinegar, Garlic Paste, Acidity Regulator (330), Spinach, Salt.

or this:
 
Water, Basil (27%), Canola Oil, Cashew Nuts, Parmesan Cheese [ Milk, Starter Culture, Salt, Firming Agent (509), Enzyme], Pecorino Cheese, Salt, Sugar, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Flavours, Food Acid (Lactic), Fruit Fibre, Pinenuts, Thickeners (Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Locust Bean Gum).
