EmpowerED
Community Collectives

Schools, organisations and local business collaborate with a common goal of improving children's health and academic results in their region.

Cultivating Wellbeing In Our Communities

Today's generation of children may be the first who have a shorter life expectancy than their parents or grandparents. Our schools are battling learning and behavioural issues and declining academic results. This has flow on effects in our local communities.

It's time to approach the wellbeing of our children differently.

EmpowerED Community Collectives unite local community leaders, businesses, schools, and larger organisations to cultivate wellbeing in our communities.

The long-term vision for the EmpowerED Community Collectives is improve the health and academic performance across the region, leading to reduced stress levels for our teachers, reduced crime rates and lower healthcare costs.

In the short term, we aim to empower whole school communities to make friends with a wide variety of food, particularly our foods grown in nature. In doing so, we help children become better learners and more successful students.

Narrabri, Wee Waa & Moree Community Collective

This collective is brought to the Narrabri, Wee Waa and Moree Community by:

This region, with its wide, brown rivers and Belah trees lining their banks, endless fields of cotton and wheat, and the chorus of cockatoos flying overhead is one of Australia's richest agricultural regions. But we are hurting.

Teachers are facing significant challenges, with many students struggling to focus and concentrate. The demands of managing classroom behaviour, addressing diverse learning needs, and dealing with the unique stressors of teaching in our rural area are affecting our region’s ability to attract and retain quality educators. These challenges can influence educational outcomes and have broader implications for community well-being and regional crime rates.

Parents have expressed concerns about their children's resilience and dietary habits, noting a trend where some families choose to relocate for educational opportunities or to avoid safety issues. This shift has notable effects on both our communities and the agricultural sector, that forms the backbone of our region.

Schools are managing a high volume of student medications everyday.

These factors collectively impact school staffing, attendance and enrolments, and they also have significant repercussions for our agricultural industries.

How can we even begin to measure the true costs to our families, schools and the health system? All of this impacts the social fabric and the economic stability of the North-West.

This is why we are joining forces as a Community Collective. We want more for the young people of this region and we want our region to remain one of the richest agricultural regions in Australia.

Maryborough EmpowerED School Collective

Maryborough is a city and a suburb in the Fraser Coast Region of Qld, and a passionate and forward thinking group of schools are leading the charge in empowerED School Collectives.

The Visit Fraser Coast page says this about Maryborough. "Maryborough was Queensland’s industrial powerhouse in the final decade of the 19th century, producing naval ships, heavy castings for sugar mills and railway locomotives and rolling stock. It was also the centre of significant agriculture, including timber milling and sugar cane growing." Learn more about Maryborough at the Visit Fraser Coast page.

This Community Collective has been created by four incredible schools who all joined forces with their local Certified Instructor, Alana Maxwell because they wanted to work together to improve the wellbeing and academic results of the children in the region.

Our Forward Thinking Schools - will your school logo be here?

This wonderful collective of four schools from Maryborough are paving the way and showing what is possible when schools become an empowerED collective.

Each school is taking part in the 2024 School Wellbeing Partnerships for Making Friends with Food® - an innovative food literacy partnership for whole school communities.

The schools meet at the start and the end of each school term with Alana, their local Certified Instructor for The Root Cause. They talk about what their goals are, what they have implemented, what's working, what's not. The schools are motivating and inspiring each other to use food literacy as an improvement tool in their schools.
