Why Make It, Not Buy It?
Look I am not going to lie to you. Our bushold LOVES chocolate but like most processed food, we minimise what we buy and consciously choose the products we’re happy with after reading the ingredients. This applies to our beloved chocolate too, because there is chocolate, then there is real chocolate. To understand what I mean, take a read of this article I wrote about Better Chocolate Options For Christmas. Everything I wrote in this article about Christmas applies to Easter also.
Why make Sara’s Salted Caramel Easter Egg or any of the other healthy homemade chocolate recipes? Firstly it’s a lot of fun to create these sorts of real food treats with your kids. Secondly when you eat these treats, at least you’re getting healthy fats and good quality carbs. They really are a treat, and they certainly do not include a list that looks like this.
Sugar, Milk Solids, Wheat Glucose Syrup, Cocoa Butter, Invert Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Vegetable Oil, Emulsifiers (442, Soy Lecithin), Flavours, Egg Albumen, Colour (160(c)). These are the ingredients from a Cadbury Creme Egg.
You may need to look for some of the ingredients for making real food chocolate in the health food aisle of the supermarket or health food store. Whilst the ingredients in homemade real food chocolate seem expensive, they will last for ages and you can use them in lots of healthy cooking recipes. In Sara’s recipe on her Facebook page, there is extra information about the ingredients in the comments.
Why not have a bit of fun over the next few weeks leading up to Easter and make your own chocolate?
Just a reminder, you don’t need to be a master chef, or have a big spotless kitchen to make awesome nutritious meals or snacks for your family.
