School holidays – yay! If you’re kids are like mine, they enjoy not having the routine of school but they also tend to get bored quickly. They need activities to keep them busy, so I decided I would make a few School Holiday Mad Food Science Fun Experiments.
The experiments are a bit of fun to keep them busy but also get them thinking about food too. Like the Mad Food Science Program™, these experiments are designed to get them to take responsibility for what they put in their mouth, and in turn, make your life easier at being a stand for your children’s health. Some experiments may need your assistance but the result will be worth it.
Snack Food Rubbish
Experiment Overview
The food we eat can create rubbish which may be able to be reused or can impact the environment we live in. Let’s take a look at the rubbish you create from your food? Can it be reused? What does this mean to the world we live in? This is a 7 day experiment.
Skill level
Suitable for pre-schoolers and up, but children under 8 may need help completing the Observation Report.
Experiment Details
Print off the Snack Food Rubbish experiment sheet. Read the overview, follow the preparation and method, then complete the Observation Record.
At the end of your experiment, be sure to record your results and send them to belinda@therootcause.com.au
An Apples Life
Experiment Overview
Take a bite of a real food – an apple – then leave it to sit on a bench for a week. Observe what happens. Compare this to what you think may happen to processed food left open on a bench for a week.
Skill level
Suitable for school aged children but under 8 may need help completing the Observation Report.

At the end of your experiment, be sure to record your results and send them to belinda@therootcause.com.au
Pancake Shake Mix
This experiment shows you how you can simply make your own pancake shake mix at home quickly with a lot less ingredients than the shake bottle you’d buy from the supermarket. Best of all, it will also be additive and preservative free.
Skill level
This experiment can be split in two parts. The first part can be done from ages 3 up. Children 8+ should be able to do the first part on their own. Younger than 8 will need your help. The second part involves cooking so is better suited for children say 10 and over. You can still do this second part with younger children but you will need to do the cooking.

Additives and Preservatives Know How
Experiment Overview
Explore the world of additives and preservatives. Learn what they do, how to look out for them and what they are made from. This is a research project so access to the internet and use of The Chemical Maze app will be required.
Skill level
Suitable for Prep/Kindy and up, but children under 8 may need help completing the research and Observation Report.

We’ll soon be launching a fun kids club where kids can hangout, learn about food, their body, cooking and more. It a place where they will become empowered to be in charge of the food they eat. To register your interest for the club, write to belinda@therootcause.com.au
