For as many years I can remember, my Dad has always told me that if I see a road side stall selling fruit and veg, to stop and buy produce. These are the farmers who need our support because they were being pushed out by the big supermarkets.

To this end, I love seeking out farmers or foragers markets whenever we’re staying in a town for any period of time. And when we’re on the road travelling Australia on our mission to Transform Children’s Health, we do love pulling over to the road-side stalls.

For the past few months whilst we have been living at my mum’s, every Sunday we have made a family day out of visiting the Foragers Market Bulli. Not only is it a venture out to get our weekly fresh produce, but the market is so much more. There’s entertainment, loads of yummy food stalls, clothes stalls, artists stalls, toys for the kids to play with and more.

The Foragers Market Bulli are located at Grevillea Park Road, Bulli. The farmers markets are held every Sunday from 9am to 2pm. On the second Sunday of the month, the farmers markets are expanded to include Artisan Stalls and on the fourth Sunday of the month, it’s a combined farmers and vintage market.

Each week we go with a budget of just $100. Here’s a few of my pics from today’s family day out and an example of the stash we got in a previous week.

This week I got a whole butternut pumpkin, 8 desiree potatoes, a huge sweet potato, and 4 big brown onions – $12.80.

Once you’ve tasted these delicious WAX FREE apples from the foragers, you become a bit of an apple snob. You can’t really go back to those shiny glossy waxy apples – even if you do soak them in Apple Cider Vinegar and water, they just are not the same. We got 9 delicious wax-free apples for just $4.50, and our friendly farmer did what he always does every week – snuck a couple of extras in the bag whilst we were having a natter about what we’d been up to last week.

That’s my stash of fruit and veg in those two bags – $48 – 5 corn, 6 zucchini, bag of parsnips, 4 head broccoli, 3 avocado, big punnet of strawberries, bunch of rhubarb, head of cauliflower, 6 bananas, big bag of baby spinach.

The farmers of all this amazing produce is Camilleri Strawberries Horsley Park. They take their produce to markets in Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra and Wollongong.

Each week we get a big bag of mushies and we also got that huge half of cabbage at the back. $13 all up.

I also bought a loaf of gluten free bread $10, and some delicious raw green bars $6. All up, I spent just under my $100. I already had some oranges left at home too – so our week for fruit and veg is set.

And our favourite stall of all – Moobi Valley – The best grass fed beef.

This is where you will find the BEST Grass Feed Beef. It’s so tender it melts in your mouth. The fact it is served with such great smiles and real life stories (no surly cashiers scanning barcodes without eye contact here) is an added bonus. Do yourself a favour – buy your beef here!

Here is a short video I took of an adventure from a previous week.

https://instagram.com/p/4L7TKHoKyx/?taken-by=therootcauseau

Of course, there is a lot more to these markets other than fruit and veg, so I thought I would share a few of my favourite stalls from the weekend.

I’ve told my hubby that when we return from travelling Australia, I would LOVE to have one of these outdoor wood fire pits. Aren’t they awesome – they are made by Lifestyle Aluminium Fabrication.

This stall by Maya Sunny Honey was simply divine. And the honey, OMG, the honey is Amazing!

Vanilla Cashew Milk Yum! I could have stayed at this stall by Cream Fork all day – so much yumminess in one spot.
