As part of our Children's Health Program, every year we give the students at taste test.
In year 1 of the program it's a green smoothie. 🥤
In year 2 it's a rainbow salad. 🌈
This year I've been developing the Mad Food Science Incursion for schools in their 3rd year of partnering with us. We're taking students knowledge into the importance of fibre and gut health. As part of this we wanted to visibly show students the difference between ingredients in an Up & Go and a nourishing Chocolate Breakfast drink you can make at home. Then to let them taste our chocolate breakfast drink.
So this week, we've been recipe testing. We took our green smoothie recipe, then added other ingredients like oats for extra fibre and also included some chia seeds for extra protein.
As I always say, food is a fun experiment. When testing the recipe, I put in too much chia seed and 6 hours later when I went to pour the smoothie, it was just too thick for pouring. It just wouldn't work at school.
Instead of it being a smoothie, I spooned it into a bowl and served it up as a Chocolate Breakfast Smoothie Bowl. My chief taste tester - Indrani - loved it as her breakfast before school.
Give it a try for breakfast on the weekend for your kids. It's a great make the night before breakfast that you can just simply add toppings too. If they like it, start making it for breakfast before school.
🍌300g frozen banana (this makes it extra creamy)
🍓50g strawberries
🥬70g baby spinach
🌾45g quick oats (or rolled oats but blend for longer)
🌱30g chia seed
🥛 500ml milk of your choice
🍫20g cacao
Throw all ingredients in the blender. Blitz and blend for 1 minute, or until it's smooth and creamy. Allow it to sit overnight in the fridge. It will thicken up. Then spoon into a bowl. Top with nuts, seeds, fruit, coconut, peanut butter. Let your kids choose what they want to have as toppings.
